The Gold Standard: Building a Capsule Wardrobe That Glows

Ten pieces, endless outfits. How to edit your closet down to what actually gets worn.

A capsule wardrobe is less about owning less and more about loving everything you own. Mine took one full season to build, two honest afternoons of trying things on, and one very large donation bag.

Start with a palette

Before you buy or bin a single thing, decide on colours. I landed on black, ivory, camel and stone, with gold as the only metallic. Every piece has to sit comfortably next to every other piece; if it does not, it does not come in.

The ten pieces

  1. A black wool coat that skims the knee
  2. A camel trench for everything between March and November
  3. Two ivory shirts, one silk, one cotton
  4. A black turtleneck you could sleep in
  5. High-waisted black trousers, tailored
  6. Straight-leg jeans in a dark rinse
  7. A black slip dress
  8. A knee-length pencil skirt in stone
  9. Black leather loafers
  10. Gold hoops, medium, worn daily
Style is knowing what to leave out.

The three-outfit rule

From there, every piece has to earn its hanger: I have to be able to name three outfits for it on the spot, using only what is already in the wardrobe. Three or more, it stays. Fewer, it goes. It sounds harsh and it is, but it is also the reason I have not stood in front of an open closet with nothing to wear in over a year.

The trick nobody tells you: the capsule is not the finished product. It is the base. Once it is solid, the one printed dress or the bright green bag you fall in love with actually works, because it has something to sit against.
